Adding text and editing text are different jobs. Editing replaces glyphs that are already on the page and has to match their font and position. Adding text puts new words where there were none, which is what you want for a scanned form, a printed template, a date on a contract, a label on a diagram, or a note in a margin.

A text box here is a real object, not a sticker. Set its font, size, colour, alignment, bold and italic, give it a background colour when it needs to sit over existing artwork, then drag or resize it with the Select tool until it lines up. Snapping to page edges, page centres and other objects on the page keeps a column of labels actually aligned rather than approximately aligned.

On export the text is written into the PDF as text, so it can be selected, searched and copied by whoever opens the file, and it stays sharp at any zoom level instead of blurring the way a pasted image would.
