A form is only as good as its details.

Drawing boxes is the easy part. What makes a form usable is everything around them: a tooltip that tells a screen reader what the field is for, a tab order that follows how the form reads rather than the order the fields happened to be created, a maximum length on a reference number, a read-only flag on a field the recipient should not touch.

Choice fields are kept internally consistent, because a broken one is worse than none. Duplicate options are collapsed with a warning, since two identical entries in a dropdown is a mistake every time. Filling a dropdown, list box or radio group with a value outside its options is refused and the valid options are named, because storing one anyway leaves the form displaying something the person filling it can never select again. An editable dropdown is the one exception, since free text is exactly what it is for.

Tab order is written two ways, because readers disagree about which signal to honour: the page’s annotation array is reordered and the tab intent is recorded alongside it. Other annotations on the page keep their place.

Do the fields still work after I download the form?

Yes. They are exported as real AcroForm fields, so anyone can complete them in Acrobat, Preview, Chrome or any standard PDF reader, and their answers are saved into the file.

Can I rename a field later?

No, and that is deliberate. A field name is what calculations, scripts and any downstream data extraction refer to, so renaming it would quietly break them. Every other property, including the tooltip shown to the person filling it in, can be changed.

What value does a checkbox export when ticked?

Yes, which is the PDF convention. A custom export value is not offered because the underlying library has no supported way to set one, and faking it would produce a file that behaves differently from what the editor showed. A checkbox that already exists in your PDF keeps its own export value.

Can I edit fields that are already in the PDF?

Yes. Click an existing field with the Select tool to open its inspector and change its tooltip, required and read-only flags, or a dropdown’s options. Anything you leave alone is preserved exactly as it was.
