Filling a form should not require Acrobat.
An interactive PDF form carries its fields inside the file: names, types, permitted values, maximum lengths, required flags. A viewer that ignores all that leaves you typing into a picture of a form. Here the real fields are rendered as real controls, and their rules are honoured, so a read-only field cannot be edited by accident and a field with a maximum length stops you at it.
Field names in real forms are usually machine generated, along the lines of topmostSubform[0].Page1[0].f1_07[0]. Where the form provides a human description, that is used as the field’s accessible name and its hover tooltip instead, so a screen reader announces something meaningful and you can tell what a cramped box is asking for.
Once filled, the document is still a form: the fields remain interactive in the exported PDF, so a recipient can correct an entry. If it should be final instead, flatten the export and the answers become part of the page.
Questions about this tool.
The things worth knowing before you edit the document.
My PDF has boxes but I cannot type in them. Why?
Those boxes are probably printed artwork rather than interactive fields, which is normal for a scanned or designed form. Use Add text to PDF to type on the page, or Create PDF form to add real fields to it.
Can I save a partly filled form and finish later?
Export the PDF with the answers you have. The exported file keeps its interactive fields, so you can reopen it here or in any reader and carry on from where you stopped.
Will the form still be editable after I export it?
Yes, by default, so mistakes can be corrected. Enable flattening on export when you want the answers baked into the page and no longer changeable.
Are required fields enforced?
Required and read-only states from the document are honoured while you fill, and any maximum length is applied as you type, so the completed file matches what the form itself asks for.
