Printed numbers and page labels are not the same thing.

There are two different kinds of page numbering in a PDF and knowing which you need saves an afternoon. Printed page numbers are drawn onto the page as content: they are visible when the document is printed and are what most people mean by numbering a PDF. That is what this tool adds.

Page labels are metadata: the identifier a reader shows in its page box, so a document can be numbered i, ii, iii through its front matter and restart at 1 for the body, or give an appendix an A- prefix. They are what makes a reader’s go-to-page match the number printed on the paper. Those are set in the Organize PDF workflow, and the thumbnail rail previews them as you edit the ranges.

Where can the number be placed?

How do I number front matter with roman numerals?
