Cropping hides, it does not delete.

Cropping a PDF sets the page’s crop box, the rectangle a reader is told to display. The content outside it stops being visible and stops being printed, but it is still present in the file and can be recovered by someone who changes the crop box back. That is true of essentially every PDF crop tool, and it is worth stating plainly rather than leaving you to assume otherwise.

For trimming scanner margins, focusing a handout on a diagram or removing a header band before printing, that behaviour is exactly right and completely reversible. For removing a name, an address or an account number, it is the wrong tool: use Redact PDF, which removes the underlying content from the exported file.

The crop is queued as a pending change and previewed on the page and in the thumbnail before you export, so you can adjust the framing rather than exporting, looking, and starting again.

Is the cropped-out content actually removed from the file?

No. Cropping sets the visible page area, so the trimmed content is hidden and will not print, but it remains in the file and can be recovered by resetting the crop. Use the Redact PDF tool when content genuinely must be removed.

Can I crop every page at once?

Crop applies to the page you draw it on, because pages in a scan often need slightly different framing. Repeat it for each page that needs trimming and review the results in the thumbnail rail.

Will cropping affect the text or images on the page?

No. Nothing is redrawn or re-encoded. The page keeps its text layer, its image quality and its annotations, and only the visible area changes.

Can I undo a crop?

Yes. The crop is a pending change until you export, so you can undo it or revert it from the pending edits panel and try a different framing.
